The oil palm is the world's most valuable oil crop. With palm oil production increasing by more than 50% in the last decade of the twentieth century and set to double in the next twenty years, it has never before been so important to understand the history, use and cultivation of this fascinating crop.

There have been many new developments since the fourth edition of The Oil Palm in 1988, particularly in the fields of clonal propagation, agronomy, breeding and molecular genetics. Also, the crop is enjoying much enhanced attention due to its potential as a major source of biodiesel This new edition has been largely rewritten and completely updated, and is the first book to record and explore these and many other developments.

The book traces the origins and progress of the industry, and describes the basic science underlying the physiology, breeding and nutrition of the oil palm. It covers both cutting-edge research, and wider issues such as genetic modification of the crop, clonal propagation, and the effects of palm oil on human health. The practical problems of maximising yield of oil and kernels are discussed in relation to the present 'yield gap' and oil extraction rate decline in Malaysia. The oil palm is also compared to the soya bean and other oil crops, and the recent history of the price of oil palm products is considered in the light of this. This completely revised new edition also contains new chapters on sustainability and the environmnet, global change, palm oil bio-diesel and the future of the industry, looking fully at the facts available and taking into account many current concerns.

About the Author

Dr RHV Corley is a plant physiologist who worked for over 15 years in oil palm research in Malaysia. He was the head of research for Unilever Plantations for a further 16 years, and is now a consultant on tropical plantation crops.

Professor B Tinker was for 7 years at the West African Institute for Oil Palm Research, and has been a consultant in Malaysia. For 12 years he was on the Programme Advisory Committee of PORIM (now MPOB). In the UK he has been Professor of Agricultural Botany, Deputy Director and head of soils at Rothamsted Experimental Station, and Director of Science at the National Environment Research Council.

Never too late!

Barbara Almond's wonderful phrase "the ubiquity of maternal ambivalence" was a great insight for me as I read, and looked back on my own years of motherhood. At times it seemed there would never be a time without small children needing everything! As much as I reveled in pregnancy, nursing, and all the small joys of raising children, I am sure I must have often felt confused and even embarrassed by the mixed feelings I had at time. Looking back, I realize I was lucky enough to have a wide circle of older friends, fellow day-care parents, and a husband who could take almost anything with a grain of salt, and a good dose of humor.

But here's where the surprise lay. When I was about to become a grandmother, I was startled when I discovered how strong my ambivalence was. Friends and colleagues were gushing with excitement, while I felt as though I had barely escaped the long years of motherhood - why all the glorification? So reading this book felt like graduating into adulthood, no matter how belated. It was illuminating to read how natural the mixed feelings are. I highly recommend this book to women at any stage of life, and to the bewildered men in their lives who are often left on the sidelines observing the raw biology of new motherhood, not realizing they are watching the evolution of a new self, messy but amazingly creative. Hats off to the author for a real triumph of integration: literature, case history, and vignettes of contemporary society. Her compassion and honesty make this very tough subject a good read. Highly recommended.

Compassion for the dark sides of motherhood

Ambivalence is the ability to hold two completely contrasting emotions about an object or person at the same time. Almond writes in detail about a specific type of ambivalence--maternal ambivalence--in which mothers or mothers-to-be can both love and hate, fear and fetishize, or disdain and desire children. Rather than say this is unique to "bad mothers," Almond disects and demonstrates the ways that all women have this form of ambivalence. She shows the good and the bad of maternal ambivalence, from motherlove and self-sacrifice to child murderers and narcissistic mothers. She uses examples from her own clinical experience and literature.

It seems appropriate that my feelings about this book are mixed. One the one hand, I appreciated her discussion of a topic that is all to often ignored, especially by women. She does an excellent job of showing how being a perfect mother is disasterous to mother and child, extoles the "good enough mother" and explains the emotions that women often try very hard to ignore and deny. I appreciated her use of literature, not because I thought she had a great understanding of the literature, but because the characters she chooses to personify these feelings are much more fleshed out than her human case studies who are probably too embarassed to be as honest as an author hiding behind his or her characters. On the other hand, her use of psychoanalysis to explain much of this condition got downright annoying. She focuses so much on early childhood (infancy and toddlerhood) and incest issues (the dreaded Oedipal complex) that she took away from her own thesis--that maternal ambivalence is normal and can be seen in wonderful, terrible, or mediocre mothers. Also, while her writing was technically excellent, she often went an entire chapter without saying much of anything. Her chapter on the ambivalence felt by the mothers of special needs children was especially disappointing and, while she brushed the surface of it, she always stopped short of saying anything useful about the ambivalence of step-mothers.

In general, as an introduction to the notion of maternal ambivalence, this is an excellent resource. It is clear that this is a field that bears much more research and I appreciated seeing something approaching scholarly consideration of the topic. There are plenty of books in the popular press about this topic (Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, Parenting Out of Control, Perfect Madness), but very few delve into the actual mind of mothers. This helps pave the way for more serious looks at a universal and important topic.

Compassion for the trials of mothering

Enriching and engaging. This wonderfully written book will help mothers, fathers, and therapists better appreciate and cope with the mix of positive and negative feelings which develop in the work of mothering. It shines a compassionate light on the difficult feelings mothers have in order to counter shame and isolation and foster thought and conversation about how best to manage in difficult circumstances.

About the Author

Karen J. Saywitz, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the UCLA School of Medicine. For 20 years she has trained students in medicine, psychology, social work, nursing, and law on the development of children and adolescents and directed programs providing mental health services to children and families in the public sector. Dr. Saywitz is past-president of the American Psychological Association's Division of Child, Youth and Family Services.

Lorinda B. Camparo, PhD, is a Professor of Psychology at Whittier College, where she has taught and conducted research on child forensic interviewing with undergraduate students since 1997. She has been an active member of the Executive Committee for The Society for Child and Family Policy and Practice (APA Division 37) for the past 15 years, serving as Program Chair for the millennium convention, Editor of The Advocate, and Member-at-Large for Communication & Technology.

Born in Eunice, Louisiana, and raised in the West, James L. Roark received his B.A. from the University of California, Davis, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University. His dissertation won the Allan Nevins Prize. Since 1983, he has taught at Emory University, where he is Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of American History. In 1993, he received the Emory Williams Distinguished Teaching Award, and in 2001 2002 he was Pitt Professor of American Institutions at Cambridge University. He has written Masters without Slaves: Southern Planters in the Civil War and Reconstruction (1977). With Michael P. Johnson, he is author of Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South (1984) and editor of No Chariot Let Down: Charleston s Free People of Color on the Eve of the Civil War (1984). Born and raised in Ponca City, Oklahoma, Michael P. Johnson studied at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where he received a B.A., and at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where he earned his Ph.D. He is currently professor of history at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and raised in Palo Alto, California, Patricia Cline Cohen earned a B.A. at the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1976, she joined the history faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2005 2006 she received the university s Distinguished Teaching Award. Cohen has written A Calculating People: The Spread of Numeracy in Early America (1982; reissued 1999) and The Murder of Helen Jewett: The Life and Death of a Prostitute in Nineteenth-Century New York (1998). She is coauthor of The Flash Press: Sporting Male Weeklies in 1840s New York (2008). In 2001 2002 she was the Distinguished Senior Mellon Fellow at the American Antiquarian Society. SARAH STAGE
Sarah Stage was born in Davenport, Iowa, and received a B.A. from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University. She has taught U.S. history for more than twenty-five years at Williams College and the University of California, Riverside. Currently she is professor of Women s Studies at Arizona State University at the West campus in Phoenix. Her books include Female Complaints: Lydia Pinkham and the Business of Women s Medicine (1979) and Rethinking Home Economics: Women and the History of a Profession (1997). She recently returned from China where she had an appointment as visiting scholar at Peking University and Sichuan University.SUSAN M. HARTMANN
Susan M. Hartmann received her B.A. from Washington University and her Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. A specialist in modern U.S. history and women s history, she has published many articles and four books: Truman and the 80th Congress (1971); The Home Front and Beyond: American Women in the 1940s (1982); From Margin to Mainstream: American Women and Politics since 1960 (1989); and The Other Feminists: Activists in the Liberal Establishment (1998). Great book, well worth reading. I'm not a huge history buff but this book was the required textbook for my American History college course. I sometimes fight sleep when reading history, but this book is surprisingly informative, doesn't drag on, and keeps the reader interested. Get it.

A Keeper

As a student librarian, you may not be surprised to read that I love books. I collect them; I have a pretty good collection so far. Among my collection are numerous school texts...but on these, I only keep the ones that I really like, that I cannot bear to part with.

Introduction to Public Librarianship is one of these books. I have enjoyed reading the history of public libraries in this country, and the writing is thought-provoking enough to have necessitated margins full of my notes. Also, with its compact size, this book is one I can read in a variety of situations--not just on my desk.

Thrashed "New" Book

This is listed as a new book, it is totally thrashed. The bottom of the book is completely smashed and looks like it was dropped on end from the fourth floor. The spine is broken and the binding is coming apart.

Excellent resource for perfecting monologue readings

I am an actor who has performed on television and film for more than ten years. I costarred on a Nickelodeon series called "Space Cases," and appeared in various movies and sitcoms. As a student of theater (I currently attend UCLA), I can honestly say that this book is a wonderful guide in honing one's monologue performances. It is also a joy to read. The characters are unique and from all walks of life. Some of the pieces are hysterically funny. Others are touching--even gripping. The monologues helped me embody a wide array of personalities, expanding my limits as an actor and experimenting with different character types. The writing is superb: Stevens exhibits a strong command of the colloquialisms and slang young people employ in their day-to-day existence. The stories are not wordy or effusive--the language is powerful, yet simple. One of the monologues landed me a part in a UCLA play this spring (ironically, the professor commented more positively on my selection of the monologue than my reading of it). This book is a valuable tool for any young aspiring actor--from their early teens to their college years.

No substance, mostly awful

All the 5 star reviews have got to be paid for or friends of the writer. I honestly cannot even believe how bad this is. I am a theatre director and coach. For a living, I prepare students for their theatrical endeavors.
The vast majority of monologues in this book are unusable.
The characters are weak, one-dimensional stereotypes. The content is borderline creepy at times. Some of the things the characters say sound so forced that it would make me uncomfortable to be the listener.
So many of them are whiny, weak, or insulting toward the "other character" which in an audition, you need to remember that is who you audition for. We don't want you to be yelling at us with weak insults. We want to see range. These monologues have ZERO range. No depth. No strength. They are surface, fluffy pieces I'd never give a student. I feel insulted that this is being passed off as quality audition material. I'm sorry, someone has to be honest.
