Fear University (Volume 1), by Meg Collett

Bestselling author Meg Collett retells the ancient Filipino legend of the aswang in this sexy, bone-chilling new series.

I've always known I was a monster, and I don't mean some teenage vampire shit either.

My mother abandoned me when I was ten years old because I have a freakish mutant disease that makes me incapable of feeling pain. I bounced from one foster family to another because too many people like to test my medical condition in a game of "Try To Make Ollie Scream." At sixteen, I killed a man for taking that game too far.

Two years later, I'm still on the run in Kodiak, Alaska. Here, I'm the most dangerous person around, until I come face to face with a creature that should only exist in folklore. The monster is an aswang, and I, with my medical anomaly, am uniquely qualified to hunt the beast that haunts the night. At least, that's what the two scarred, mostly crazy 'swang hunters tell me when they kidnap me and take me to Fear University, a school where young students learn to hunt and kill aswangs.

I arrive at the university a prisoner, but I stay because I finally find my freedom.

For once in my life, I belong. I'm needed. I make a home for myself inside the university masquerading as an old Alaskan prison. Something close to happiness warms my icy heart when I'm with my scarred, still mostly crazy tutor, Luke Aultstriver. For a murdering runaway like me, Fear University is a haven where I can put my skills to good use hunting monsters in the night.

But when certain truths come to light and even more lies are exposed, I fear that I, Ollie Andrews, am the worst kind of monster of all. And, maybe, they should be hunting me.

Read if you dont mind spoilers and an honest review of this book and the second book......
By Amazon Customer
I give this book one star, only because it starts out a good book. But by the time you get to the end, and to the second book, the killing season, its no longer a paranormal romance. Its about torture, abuse, almost hardcore s&m stuff. If you like reading about ALOT OF VIOLENCE, TORTURE, ABUSE, about characters who are sadomasochistic, obsessed with violence and death. If you are sure to be bored, yet simultaneously absolutely horrified, by the level of torture, distrust, manipulation, sheer pain, this book, and the ones after, will put you through, then go ahead and read it. If youre a stephen king/horror fan/sadomasochist yourself, you will be delighted by all the pain, drama, mental anguish, murderous thoughts, with deeds to match, and your ability to empathize will eventually run out for the female lead character, simply because the torture, the betrayal, the pain, never seems to end for her. I could barely get through the second book, towards the end, because theres a scene between her and MAX, that guy who messed her up so much when she was younger. You know the one, the guy who, along with his father, took her, and another little girl, and basically did unspeakable things to them in a basement, after which he made the female lead dig her and the little girls grave, except ollie didnt die? She escaped, after bashing the father in the head and killing him. Well, after finding out totally untrue things about her mother, and her father, in the second book, ollie gets to revisit her time with max. Max tortures her again, for about 3 days, i think, before someone finally rescues her, then makes a statement about how the rescuers werent supposed to leave her long enough for the guy to "break her," because "ollie volkova doesnt break!" So her "resuers" let max have her for a little while so he could cut her up good. Oh, and did i happen to mention how max breaks her? He ties her hands to the ceiling, her feet to the floor, securely. He feeds her aswang saliva so she will feel all the pain he inflicts on her, and cuts her up, shallow little cuts everywhere, blood dripping down her body, puddles on the floor, a real "Carrie" movie look to it. Then, he uses a weapon to hold her chin up from her chest, with thorns in it, so she cant lower her head, and the thorns cut into her chest, 3 inches, exposing her bones and her heart. The story ends where luke finally finds out what she is and cant decide if he loves her enough not to kill her. This is after he finds out what she went through with max, and all the bloody, gory, freakish details about his own family. Just a real messed up series. I havent read the third one, dont plan on it. But if you could read all that stuff i wrote, and still want to read the books, then these books are right up your alley. As i said, if you like pain, torture, abuse, betrayal, manipulation, psychopathic and sociopathic tendencies, obsessions with death, sadomasochism, and a thinly disguised attempt at writing a paranormal romance novel, then enjoy. But, if you arent desensitized to those things yet, then you might want to skip this series. But if you read it anyways, after i warned you, and, like me, wish you could take back the hours, not to mention the nearly $10, you spent on these books, then dont say i didnt warn you. Youre on your own......

Too bad the heroine is chewed up and spit out so much. Seems like the person she started out to be, the person she is, down deep, wants to be loved, but just cant seem to catch a break. She wants to be good, but the people around her only want to mold her, for their own selfish reasons, into a super soldier of some sort. Its really sad. It mirrors life too much. The poor girl had been through too much and her pain just wont end. It could have been a really good series if the author had just realized theres a point to which a character, a story, can go, before the reader, and the whole book, becomes just too much violence and pain. The right reader will put the book down in disgust, and simple heartbreak, for the heroine, who seems like she will never be saved from her endless torment. I cant read about it anymore.

Fear University
By Maria T
Forget werewolves and vampires in this world it's all about the 'swangs. Wondering what they are? So is Ollie because it appears she just killed one! And then there's the guys who won't tell her anything, but make decisions for her like she'll just go along with them. Wrong on so many levels, but sometimes you can't fight physically, soon after Ollie finds out the truth but begins to realize there are many different versions of it. Who can she trust and can she handle finding out the ultimate truth. About herself?

From a young age Ollie was sent from one foster home to another because people were either too freaked out by her condition or they liked testing her a bit too much. Not being able to feel pain might sound cool but she would give anything to just be normal and have a family that actually wants her.

When she finds herself at Fear University she may have finally found it, but if it looks too good to be true.... Well then she just needs to figure out what is going on before it gets her killed, or worse.

Ollie might have a smart mouth, but she chooses what she says carefully and listens even more. She hears and sees things most would overlook making her smart and definitely my kind of character. She is no damsel in distress, but will use whatever she can to save herself.

This is book one in a new series I'll definitely be following. The world was created so well you feel like you're right there with the characters, living Ollie's life alongside her. Great paranormal read with an interesting monster twist!

If you like creepy dudes treating women like crap and being sadistic look no further!!
By Wackysprockets
This book is dreadful. Not thought out at all. No one is that sadistic. This book is creepy. You might like it, if you like strong women being abused. If you read anything about someone with that sort of of pain blocking disorder, you would know trainers have to be extra careful to not damage them permanently, because the trainee can't tell and will become crippled. Then the creepy sadistic main man Luke just stabs her...for no reason...or cause she talked back...and she feels SMALL? Then she just limps to class like its embarrassing she was stabbed, and no one thinks its odd or arrests the crazy dude!? I hate books like this, its just wrong, wrong against humanity, and it was also poorly researched and ugly. Unless your into thinking women deserve being treated like this, then this book is for you. I wish I could wash my mind out with soap to get the psycho subversive demeaning crap out of my head. On Christmas eve too :(. Watch out for the fake reviews...almost all of them.

Edit: Keeping it classy.
