The book contains contributions from 9 authors (from the UK, Greece and Norway) on all important types of dynamic loading on structures. Apart from the load models, as described in the Probabilistic Model Code, part II, of the Joint Committee on Structural Safety (available on the JCSS site), the book also includes chapters on wave loads (by Torgeir Moan, NTNU), and human- and machine induced vibrations (by JW Smith, Bristol University), which the reviewer found very interesting to read.

About the Author
Ngugi wa Thiong'o is an award-winning novelist, playwright, and essayist from Kenya whose novels have been translated into more than thirty languages. He lives in Irvine, California, where he is Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine.

Abdulrazak Gurnah is the author of the Booker Prize–shortlisted novel Paradise, among other novels. He was born in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and teaches English literature at the University of Kent in England.

Compelling story w profound moral msg for all activists

I loved this book. The story itself is compelling, detailing both African and European characters' perspectives on Kenyans' struggle for independence from Britain. Just for the story alone, the book is an intriguing page-turner that completely satisfies. But beyond that, it has a powerful and inspirational moral message that I have taken with me and hope never to forget.
Each of the major characters commits an act of betrayal to attain a greater goal, whether it's the British officer who wants to create a happy, harmonious colony and finds himself torturing and murdering in pursuit of this vision, or whether it's the Kenyan rebel who betrays his comrade to save his own life, feeling that he must survive to perform important tasks for his people.
Each one chooses less-than-perfect means to an imagined end. But what we and they learn, is that the "end" never comes, and we are left living day-to-day in the rubble of our "means." The betrayals that crisscross the novel scar all the characters with heavy losses, representative of the losses and betrayals that scarred Kenya as it stood on the threshhold of independence, divided between those who had collaborated with British occupation and those who had rebelled. And yet the final note is one of hope, that somehow reconciliation and transcendence of past injuries can be attempted.
I took to heart two messages: that those of us who struggle for justice in today's world must never betray our own principles in pursuit of some supposed higher good--because we too will be left only with our betrayals and no higher good in sight. And, that even after betrayals and years of conflict, there is still a spark of hope for renewal.

An even-handed, complex, masterful study of a revolution

A Grain of Wheat is a remarkable book, which manages to intertwine personal tragedies and joys with national ideologies and events quite effortlessly. The novel is partly the story of a nation - of Kenya's (ultlimately successful) struggle to rid itself of British domination - but mainly the book deals with the toll that this long fight has taken on individuals; the impact, both for good and evil, that it has made on individual lives.
Another reviewer mentioned that the book's fluid chronology - which keeps flashing back and forth between present and past - made the book difficult to follow. For me, this style of writing only enhanced the book's strengths - throughout the course of the story you are allowed to see the same events through many different sets of eyes (and it is amazing how different the same thing can look to a British Army officer and a Kenyan freedom fighter.)
To sum up - A Grain of Wheat works very well, both as an exploration of Kenya's painful history, and as a realistic look at the toll that any war will take on the people who fight in, and live through, it. Definitely reccomended!

A brand new perspective upon the emancipation of so-called Third World Country! On the verge of Kenya independence, both colonizers and colonied were bewildered and confused. White colonial agents lost faith on their lifelong commitment, and Kenyans were cast into a precarious future which they had been longed for and at the same time, worried about. National passion became a nostalgia censorship, and those who did not contribute to this "exploit" or those who chose to save his own skin or family and betray his to the movement bore a brand "Cain" on their forehead forever. A vivid description of the struggle between nation and individual.

Loaded with Good Ideas

If you'd like higher ranking YouTube videos, this book is for you. It does assume the basics, namely, that you know how to set up a YouTube account, know how to do Keyword research using Google's Adwords, and have a little technical ability. He focuses on how to videos and provides so many tips that I found myself taking notes! I'm not sure if all the tips work, but he does provide reasons for them all that make sense. I'm eager to try some out!

An easy and informative read, "How To Rank in YouTube" is by far the most helpful book I've read on the subject - so much so that I have been averaging an increase of 50 plus views per day on my ad-free info site, the krystalpureguy channel. I can say this with confidence because I've been tracking results on each of my videos on a daily basis. The information on keywords and descriptions was huge! My channel isn't there yet, but "How to Rank" has definitely improved my positioning on the search engines...well done!

Worth The $3, But Not A Penny More

Whereas this book has some great insight on key factors in improving your SEO strategy, a lot of this books' content is common sense and readily available, within seconds, through a simple Google search (ironically enough). This book is rather short with numerous type-o's throughout, most notably when Green recommends that you use as close to 60 "words" as possible in your YouTube video title. He quite clearly means "characters," but such a serious type-o should not have been overlooked before selling the book on the Amazon digital book market, and this book has several of them. There are some very interesting "tricks" of YouTube SEO strategy that Green shares, however, such as using quotes around certain tags in your video tags section which I had not thought of trying before. Thus, this book is worth the $3 purchase - just don't expect to learn tying drastically different from what you might already know. A great beginner book, not a very adequate book for those already familiar with basic SEO strategy.

The weight of the paper is gone!!!

Organizing Paper @ Home: What to Toss and How to Find the Rest!

I have always been overwhelmed by the massive stacks of paper and unopened mail at my house! I'm a clean/organized person in general but paper has always been a problem for me. I sometimes can be a procrastinator and the paper in my house definitely is the biggest sign of that. I always have these wishy-washy thoughts about "well... what if I need this for this... or "I'll get to it when I have time..." and have put this off for YEARS... and dreaded it!!! I have had loose systems in place for home/office organization, but nothing standard/anything I've regularly committed to.

"Organizing Paper @ Home" has answered all of those questions for me... how to decide what to keep and what to toss... what to do with emails and calenders and home office organization...... and after only a few days (straight) of implementing the systems in this book I feel SO MUCH BETTER in general about life... more in control and honestly I feel more peace of mind knowing that I have attacked the mounds of paper and I now know how to manage and organize the constant flow of paper that will continue to come for the foreseeable future. I must also say that I have known about this book for many months now and put off buying it knowing I had so much work to do... but shredding an entire combo recycling bin full of paper felt SO DARN GOOD!!! It was therapeutic actually!

At war with clutter?

Many years ago, maybe 12 or more, I attended a seminar and The Paper Tiger was one of the products mentioned. Since I am unorganized by nature and have "follow-through" issues, I bought it. I fell in love with the system as it made so much sense. It was like having a mini google machine that could organize your life's stuff in a way that works for you. I sprung for the 8 hour miracle and had the paper Tiger Lady herself, Barbara Hemphill, come to my house so I could jump right in and use the Paper Tiger to its potential. It was awesome and Barbara couldn't be nicer, more professional and helpful; a lovely person. Now, I wish I could say it changed my life forever, but that would be disingenuous. I fell back into old habits; not their fault, but mine, and I strayed away from a good thing. However, now I am back in the organizational groove, and when I saw this book I bought it without a moment's hesitation. I am pleased to report that it has re-inspired me and I have declared "War on Clutter" and with General Barbara Hemphill and the Paper Tiger to guide me, there will be no letting up this time. Anything associated with Barbara Hemphill and/or Paper Tiger is well, well, well worth the small investment.

Didn't Work for Me

Amidst all of the 4- and 5-star reviews, I apparently am the lone dissenter. I've been looking for ways to help me organize my papers and my electronic files, and I was hoping this book was it. It was not.

The chapter that dealt with organizing papers was very high-level. For example, the authors state something to the effect of "You can use colored tabs and folders to separate categories." Really? They did not recommend this approach (which I agree with), but I was really looking for a slew of different approaches that would allow me to pick the one that would work best for me. As for organizing electronic files, the gist was, "You can organize your electronic files the same way that you do your paper files." Hmmm...

I will say that I liked the tone and writing style of the authors, so it was an easy read. As for the content, I'm far less impressed and definitely do not think this book is worth the $10 price tag that I paid for it.

About the Author
Nuruddin Farah was born in 1945 in Baidoa, Somalia. He is the author of numerous novels, novellas, short stories, and plays. His novels include Hiding in Plain Sight, Crossbones, and his trilogies Variations on the Theme of an African Dictatorship and Blood in the Sun, which comprises Maps and Gifts as well as Secrets. After the publication of Sweet and Sour Milk in 1979, Farah became persona non grata in Somalia and served a self-imposed exile of more than twenty years, before he was permitted to visit in 1996. His novels have been translated into many languages and have won numerous international awards. Farah was named the 1998 laureate of the Neustadt International Prize for Literature.
