Pretty Good ...for the 1960s

This book is a classic, and if you are seriously interested in the history of U.S. higher education, you can't get around it. But it's also forty years old. Like most major works on the history of U.S. higher education, it pretends that the North East and Mid West can speak authoritatively for the rest of the country. The book is therefore quite incomplete, which should be taken into account when reading it. Check out John Thelin's 2004 History of American Higher Education, it's much more up-to-date and comprehensive.

About the Author
Lukas Erne is Professor of English at the University of Geneva. He has been the Fowler Hamilton Research Fellow at Christ Church, University of Oxford, and the recipient of research fellowships at the Folger Shakespeare Library and the Huntington Library. Lukas Erne's other publications include this book's sequel Shakespeare and the Book Trade (2013), Shakespeare's Modern Collaborators (2008) and Beyond 'The Spanish Tragedy': A Study of the Works of Thomas Kyd (2001). He is also the editor, with Guillemette Bolens, of Medieval and Early Modern Authorship (2011), of The First Quarto of Romeo and Juliet (2007) and, with M. J. Kidnie, of Textual Performances: The Modern Reproduction of Shakespeare's Drama (2004). The first edition of Shakespeare as Literary Dramatist was published in 2003 and was named a 'book of the year' in the Times Literary Supplement.

Ambitious and Quietly Revolutionary...A "Must-Read" Book

"Shakespeare as Literary Dramatist" is a book for the new millennium...one which just MIGHT forever change the way you think about Shakespeare.

This is an often provocative and always gripping volume which explores the rise of printed play-texts in late Elizabethan and early Jacobean England, and in doing so, invites a much-needed rethinking of many cherished assumptions concerning the literary culture of that era. It deftly explores the long-ignored mutual interests of authors, theater companies, book sellers and the marketplace of potential buyers for play texts...ably illuminating what may be described as Shakespeare's consciously LITERARY ambitions and practices.

I do not think it an overstatement to suggest that this book (together with its sequel "Shakespeare and The Book Trade") forces us to rethink both: a) the late 20th century obsession with (and near sole-focus) on performance-based textual criticism of Shakespeare and b) the theatrical history of the Jacobethan era at large. In exploring the relationship between the acted and the printed word, Erne SHAKES both the theatrical and the academic stages. Now on to some specifics as to his methods:

Lukas Erne's examines the genesis and history of the 20th century's near-exclusive focus on "Performance Criticism". To put in bluntly, he reveals this school of thought to be rooted in biased research, unsupportable conjectures concerning period practices and flat-out academic myth. In chapter after chapter of painstaking research (backed up with extensive footnotes and scholarly citations) he explores academia's recent love affair with the vision of Shakespeare as merely a 'Public Theater Playwright Grinding out Commercial Scripts' (akin to a Hollywood TV writer). Then, via his own meticulous research, combined with that of a handful of other academics who have genuinely STUDIED, DOCUMENTED AND CONTEXTUALIZED the publishing and book trade practices of Shakespeare's era, Erne demolishes (with hard data from the publishing trade) the notion that Shakespeare wrote only for the stage and did not care about the publication or the literary afterlife of his plays.

To cite just one examined data set: Erne notes the length of each of Shakespeare's plays and points out that historical records show that the "dramatic portion" of Early Modern theater performances on the Public Stage (minus the music prior to performance and the jigs afterward) were typically about 2 to 2.5 hours in duration. Current RSC staging allows for an approximate maximum of 900 spoken lines per hour. Even at putative performance speeds which would substantially exceed these modern standards (as proposed by academics for Early Modern drama) the maximum number of lines that could have be spoken in that 2 to 2,5 hour time frame would have been approximately 2300 to 2700 lines. Yet, no less than 28 out of Shakespeare's 37 First folio plays are over 2700 lines in length...with a number over 3200 lines...and Hamlet and Richard III coming in at nearly 3600 lines !!!

Apparently, most of the 20th century "thought leaders" of Shakespearean textual criticism prefer not to *seriously* ask themselves this simple question: "Why did Shakespeare write such long plays...ones which could not be PRACTICALLY acted on the public stages of his era ??"

(Note: BTW, in a case of truly circular reasoning, the above-mentioned putative "fast-paced" performance speeds envisioned for Early Modern theater companies, were first CONJECTURED by academics due to the very fact that the plays were so long to begin with !!)

Erne convincingly makes the case that the full-length versions of Shakespeare's plays were long because they were written with publication AS LITERATURE firmly in mind, and that these long version plays were routinely condensed for Public Stage performances. His research also establishes a compelling case that the so-called "bad quartos" of Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and Henry V represent some form of condensed acting versions for the London stage...and that, as such, far from being ignored and rejected (as is the current vogue) they should be of intense scholarly interest aimed at discovering true Original Practices.

While all of the above may sound like common sense to the casual reader (who may be unfamiliar with the questionable approaches taken by certain eminent Shakespeare academics) it goes directly against recent past and current "scholarly wisdom" as preached by many leading lights of the field, including: Stanley Wells, Gary Taylor and a host of other "name" academics.

After reading Erne, one wonders how they could have EVER got it all so wrong.

Per further research by Erne into the exact timing of their publication, the quarto versions of MOST of Shakespeare's plays would have been published with the consent and assistance of the acting company (and in some cases the author himself)...not "stolen" by a conspiracy of paid confederates among the audience scribbling furiously in notebooks, or "memorially reconstructed" by "dishonest actors" to be later released by "thieving publishers" and "pirate printers"...which is the scenario that a host of distinguished academics (including the august names above) have clung-to for nearly a century.

Erne replaces this flawed vision with shorter & crisper plays as acted on the stage and with a Shakespeare who was a self-consciously literary artist...one who was well aware of the long-term value of his plays as scholarly works...an author who intended the majority of his plays both as great literature to be carefully studied on the page, as well as (in condensed version) scripts to be performed before a live audience.

This book is highly recommended for all of those who prefer common sense explanations of Shakespeare as a flesh & blood human being and author versus strained logic of academic elites pushing their own pet agendas.

Unlimited Indeed

Pastor Kynan Bridges has written another well researched book on faith, favor, and healing for the confessing believer. Like his previous books, the reader must take time to digest what is written. The author is preparing the church for a great reformation of signs and wonders during these last days. A second reading will be necessary to fully benefit and apply the Word of God to my life and ministry.

Good but not as good as the handbook

I have both the calculations book by Brian McPartland and the NEC Handbook by Brian and his dad Joe. I prefer the handbook more, although you may want both. My problem with this book is that it was not proofed adequately for math errors and typos. I have found at least four computational errors in the examples.
I am not to impressed with this book because it does not take you too far beyond the examples already in the NEC or beyond the obvious. The explainations of why they are computing things the way they are (logic behind the computations) are all explained in the Handbook. Many of the examples are merely duplications of the handbook examples. If you want one good book, buy the Handbook. Don't waste money on the NEC handbooks published by NFPA. They merely waste space by quoting the NEC with some useless comments thrown in. McPartland is the only guy who has ever written a handbook worth having that goes in depth as to why the code is the way it is.

Wayside School is Falling Down

Do you like action, comedy, laughs, and good times? If you do then read Wayside School is Falling Down by Louis Sachar. It's about the funny and strange things that happen in Wayside school. It's one of the funniest books I have ever read.
An example of one of the funny moments was when the author wrote a whole chapter backwards! I realized the chapter was backwards after I read it forwards. What was especially interesting and funny though was that the girl in the chapter does everything backwards.
Another funny instance is that the school is thirty floors high. What's even funnier is there is only one classroom on each floor! Also there is no nineteenth floor. A different funny thing is in another chapter a girl goes on the nineteenth floor even though there isn't one.
I enjoyed the book very much. It was funny and each chapter wasn't long. You should read this book if you don't like reading. This is because it is almost like reading a book of jokes. It's not long and it's funny. You should read this book.

This book is down-right funny. Goofy even! I think it is one of the funnier, insane books for kids out there. Each chapter brings a whole new meaning to fun as you read about all the students in Mrs. Jewls's class. Trust me when I say you will love it! If you really want to have a good time while reading a book, this one is for you.

Does Johnny Hate to Read?

Louis Sachar has found a way to combine a child's wacky way of viewing the world, clever plays on words, phrases, and chapters(!!), and a cast of quirky characters to produce a set of books that will coax any reader to keep on reading.
The third of his Wayside School series, Sachar turns the school upside-down, and, in the process, guarantees entertaining reading for adult and child alike. I particularly enjoy the audio version of the book, since the "voice" on tape successfully makes each character's persona his own.
This is a book that your child (and you!) will find yourself reading over and over, discovering new meanings in different passages each time.
Mr. Sachar, keep writing!!

I just received this in the mail, and I am SO glad I've held out on getting this book!! The 4th edition is so much better than the 3rd!! Not only does it add instructions and step by steps for PhotoShop renderings, it includes a CD that has a video of the author herself doing a step by step of a basic croquis. The book is very daunting at over 500 pages, but the video on the disc gets directly into it and makes it easier to move forward in the book. It throws a lot of information at you at once. LOVE IT though. So glad I have it!

He was born in a cave in rural east Turkey as his parents were held at gunpoint by outlaws determined to challenge the new government in Ankara. At eighteen, with his family's hearts in their throats, he was off to Vienna to study medicine. But when Nazi police suspected him of being a Jew, he was not allowed to register for classes. But instead of returning to Turkey defeated, he chose to push into Germany where he bargained enrollment as a first year medical student. From 1943 to 1945 he was harassed by Hitler's police as a potential spy. Headstrong, confident-he typically made matters worse. The bombs killing some of his classmates were dropped from British and American aircraft. Since this story contains as much history and adventure as medical triumph, a brief glossary of medical terms make it accessible to anyone reading at the high school level.

About the Author
Dr. Larry Rogers learned the rudiments of microneurosurgery under the tutelage of his subject, Professor Gazi Yasargil, while visiting Switzerland for five weeks as a forth-year resident from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. His undergraduate degree was from Davidson College and he graduated from the Duke Medical School. Ultimately he practiced, microneurosurgery in Charlotte, North Carolina for almost three decades. He has authored or co-authored four additional books, three of which are about microneurosurgery, including a novel set in the 1980s.

Great book about a great man

Great book about a great man. Well-written with many insights and in-depth narrations. Missing details on the family of Dr. Yasargil after he left Turkey. Also missing is information on Dr. Krayenbuhl's retirement. Overall, a good read for those who are indebted to the Professor.

A Book Not Only for Surgeons and Physicians

One doesn't have to be a neurosurgeon or any kind of surgeon or even a physician to enjoy this wonderful biography of M. Gazi Yasargil. The author, Larry Rogers, M.D., a notable neurosurgeon himself, portrays "the father of modern neurosurgery" clearly and honestly, showing the flaws along with the attributes of this genius and ingenious pioneer of modern neurosurgery. If you have ever had a surgical procedure involving neurosurgical equipment and techniques, now you know who to thank. But the book is more than a biography, it is also an insightful history. It is a history of Turkey (Yasargil was born in a cave in Turkey) just as it was emerging from its Ottoman Empire past into the modern world. It is history of Germany in the last two years of Nazi rule (Yasargil was a medical student there and survived allied bombing raids). And, of course, it is Yasargil's history of his surgical residence and as a neurosurgeon and influential innovator in Switzerland (along with visiting-surgeon appointments to operate and teach all over the world), and that of the men and women who played major roles with him (and sometimes against him) in the development of modern neurosurgery. While you would not want some of the physicians at your bedside, you would want, as Dr. Rogers points out, to be in Yasargil's care; he was at his kindest toward his patients, even when sometimes he was less than kind or tolerant toward colleagues and students. To Dr. Roger's credit, he shows the gnarly side as well as the brilliant and compassionate side of Yasargil's genius. Whatever you do, don't be put off by the technical nomenclature of neurological diseases or of the procedures done to cure them. There is helpful glossary to get you through much of the neurosurgical jargon. Medical professionals and non-medical persons will, I believe, become engrossed in this thorough biography of a most fascinating man and with modern neurosurgery to which he dedicated his whole life.

Pioneer Brain Surgeon and humanitarian

Breakthroughs in medicine especially the practice of neurosurgery require someone with vision unwavering determination and a intolerance for the status quo. Gazi Yasargil a surgeon of exemplary skill had an idea. The idea was to reduce or even eliminate the neurological deficits that so often accompanied brain surgeries to do this he would need new tools and new skill sets thus began the advent of the use of special microscopes and micro instruments to both improve upon current techniques and also extend new capabilities in the excising of neuro pathologies deep inside the human brain. With the assistance of a few like minded colleagues and many hours of practice in a lab perfecting techniques on animals, Gazi was able to make remarkable improvements in patient outcomes. Years of dedication and sacrifice coupled with a willingness to teach others finally won over even the most conservative practitioners. The microscope became the tool that made ordinary surgeons great and the highest skilled ones even better. All patients and their families owe a debt of gratitude to this pioneer of medical excellence in the field of neurosurgery.
