What did pioneer children do for fun? What did they fear as they crossed the plains? Susan Arrington Madsen, author of The Lord Needed a Prophet, has collected actual accounts of thirty young people (under the age of twenty) who were members of Mormon wagon trains and handcart companies. B.H. Roberts describes how he and his sister traveled from England as virtual orphans until they joined their mother in Utah. Fanny Fry tells of her fear when she was nearly crushed to death by a heavily loaded handcart.

Good stories, truly enlightening, but needs some editing
By Raspberry G.
I read "I Walked to Zion" with a lot of enthusiasm. The book contains many accounts written by young people in their own words. The reader gains a good understanding of what the trek from Illinois to Utah must have been like for children and young adults. Of course youth like to keep their accounts short so most details are missing. Especially missing are the hardships of the menfolk who did most of the physical labor of the trek.

Still the reader comes away with an appreciation for the difficulties of the children, and their victories as well. Many of these young folk carried siblings on their backs, cared for the cattle, walked in snow until they were numb, and some of them died of cholera, exposure and starvation.

As a Mormon living in modern times, it brought home to me a stark recognition of what my ancestors endured just to be with the saints who believed as they did. Living one's religion in peace was a luxury not afforded to the early saints, and this book takes a hard look at how that affected the youth of the church. Uprooted from their homes in England, Sweden, and other European countries, these children suffered weeks in the dark holds of ships. They emerged in America only to have to travel across its plains, a trek of nearly 1,200 miles, on foot in fair and foul weather. Many of them lost their parents, and gave up everything they had to be with the saints in Zion. I shall always be grateful for their sacrifices.

If there is one complaint I had with the book it is that it is very chopped-up. After each individual's story, there is a list of references. While I agree that references are critical, they should have been placed at the back of each book, with an indication of which stories drew from them. In this way, the book would have better continuity.

Still, I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone.

The Five Temptations of a CEO: A Leadership Fable, by Patrick M. Lencioni

Absorbing, compelling, and utterly memorable, The Five Temptations of a CEO is like no other business book that's come before. Author Patrick Lencioni—noted screenplay writer and sought-after executive coach -- deftly tells the tale of a young CEO who, facing his first annual board review, knows he is failing, but doesn't know why.

"This book provides extraordinary insight into the pitfalls that leaders face when they lose sight of the true measure of success: results. This model is required reading for my staff."
—Eric Schmidt, chairman of the board and CEO, Novell

Any executive can learn how to:

  • recognize the mistakes that leaders can make
  • avoid errors before they occur
  • and much more!

Refreshingly original and utterly compelling, the story of this executive (written to be read in one sitting) will be enjoyed, remembered, and reread for years to come. It serves a timeless and potent reminder that success as a leader can come down to practicing a few simple behaviors—behaviors that are painfully difficult for each of us to master.

"Lencioni delivers a provocative message: CEOs mainly have themselves to blame when things go wrong. If you're a CEO (or any manager for that matter), do you have the courage to face the blame? Doing so could change your future-for the better."
—Dr. Jerry Porras, coauthor, Built to Last; professor, Stanford School of Business

You won't find any dry management rhetoric in this razor-sharp novelette. Apply these riveting lessons in leadership with the self-assessment at the end of the book. It will change your career!

Amazon.com Review
Imagine running into the ultimate management mentor late one night on an otherwise deserted commuter train, and walking away from the strange encounter with an encapsulated guide to success in the corporate world. That's exactly what screenwriter and business coach Patrick Lencioni has done in The Five Temptations of a CEO: A Leadership Fable, placing his tale in an easy-reading and thought- provoking kind of self-help novel.

Designed to be read in a single sitting, this book uses the unexpected meeting between troubled high-tech honcho Andrew O'Brien and a mysterious old man named Charlie to explore a series of common traps that can unwittingly ensnare any hard-driven executive. Lencioni hones in on the five "temptations" of the workplace: desires to jealously guard career status, consistently remain popular with subordinates, unfailingly make correct decisions, constantly strive for an atmosphere of total harmony, and always appear invulnerable. A discussion of the story's events and their real-world implications follows, as Lencioni shifts from screenwriter mode to business coach to help answer some of the questions he raises. --Howard Rothman

From Library Journal
This tape presents the story of Andrew, a CEO, and the five temptations he faces in management. The central part of the work is a quirky dream. Very simplified, the temptations are putting self first, wanting to be liked rather than to lead, making decisions reluctantly, elevating harmony above productive argument, and not trusting subordinates. The author's discussions at the end of the story help clarify the main points, and the narration is nicely done by Boyd Gaines. Some of the ideas are good, but the advice is not consistently insightful. Recommended only for libraries with large management collections.AMark Guyer, Stark Cty. Dist. Lib., Canton, OH
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
San Francisco CEO coach Lencioni has used his consulting experience to weave a novel based on business precepts. Here the five common faults of CEOs are relayed through a thinly disguised fictional scenario: rapid transit janitor Charlie teaches lessons to Trinity Systems leader Andrew. The prose is primarily dialogue--and fairly easy to follow. In fact, the afterwords seem somewhat superfluous, justified by the author in terms of further clarity and readers' probable need for self-assessment. From valuing ego overachievement to an unwillingness to trust, each of the five faults is applicable to any rising manager, young or old. Barbara Jacobs

You're probably guilty of at least one.
By Abi Noda
The *Five Temptations of a CEO* is a quick and worthy read for leaders and managers.

The book describes five common leadership pitfalls – even the most experienced managers will find themselves guilty at one point or another:

1. Being more interested in career status than achieving results.
2. Wanting to be popular with your direct reports instead of holding them accountable.
3. Wanting to ensure that your decisions are correct.
4. Desire for harmony.
5. Desire for invulnerability.

My biggest personal takeaways:

* Measure yourself by your achievements, not job title or position on the ladder.
* Don't get too friendly with subordinates – this will potentially hold back your ability to hold them accountable. Your job is to deliver results for the company, not be popular with your employees.
* Make sure goals and measures of success are clearly defined sooner rather than later. Without clarity, there's nothing to hold anyone accountable to. Make decisions even if you aren't 100% sure they are correct.
* Make sure members of your team feel safe and willing to engage in intense debates. Encourage them to challenge your ideas.

A must have for every executive
By Sunny Lowe
Lencioni has hit a real home run with this short book. I am a CEO of a small business, and regularly meet with other owners of small businesses, and see all around me their excellence and their failures. So many of these are my own failures, as well.
So, as with any group, the largest limitation to the group growing or becoming what it should be, is the limitation on the growth of the leadership in the organization, in specific, the growth of the leader.
To that end, the leader must grow at a rate at least 2 years ahead of where the company is, right now.
To figure out what that might be for you, imagine the growth of your organization succeeds at the rate you would like, then ask yourself, "What institutions, training, development, policies etc must be fully functioning then, to mKe it successful at that level?" The answer defines where you as leader, need to be today.
This book covers 5 of the key issues of leadership, in a short, easy to understand way, to give you a framework for the growth you need.
I now buy it, and give it to the CEOs I meet as a gift to the future of their organization.

Powerful Work from Lencioni...once again!
By C. M. Aiken
Some years ago, a friend recommend The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by this author and I fell for his writing style and wisdom. Reading books on business leadership are purposeful but also pleasurable for me. I love to dig into business leadership and seek to apply the principles to different areas of my life.

I purchased this 10th anniversary edition of the book recently. Honestly I struggled a bit with purchasing it since I do not consider myself a CEO at all; however, the book would share principles of leadership and I decided to do so anyway. In this book, Lencioni shares a business "fable" whereby he examines the plight of a particular CEO. In the fable, this CEO comes across a "truth-speaker" (this time in a dream) who imparts to him 5 mistakes that CEOs who fail...make. These are not innate characteristics, but are temptations that, if not mastered, will certainly be the demise of the business leader. The temptations are:
* Choosing status over results
* Choosing popularity over accountability
* Choosing certainty over clarity
* Choosing harmony over conflict
* Choosing invulnerability over trust

Each of the temptations drive to the heart of what it is to be a leader. A CEO often functions without close accountability other than to a Board or Shareholders. As such, much of his daily management must come from self-discipline.

While many things caught my attention in the book, one particular observation was driven home:
"...A great president of the United States wouldn't be as proud of being elected as he would of actually accomplishing something. And a nonprofit agency shouldn't feel good getting funds unless they did something meaningful with the money. And there isn't a great coach alive who would say that his best day was getting hired. Winning games and championships is what great coaching is all about" (p.29).

This particular quote reminds me of the fact that great leaders do not play it safe or consider their role as accomplishment. Their role of leadership is for a purpose and every great CEO must understand that he is accountable to DO SOMETHING with the mantle of leadership that benefits the organization he leads. "Leaders" who simply exist and entertain the masses or maintain the status quo...aren't really leaders at all.

I recommend this book and this author. It is an easy read and offers many opportunities for self-evaluation. It also is a sobering examination for the reader. 5 stars again Lencioni!

Review
This incredibly detailed reference book by an experienced lighting designer can serve a dual purpose: It can help landscape architects who are working with lighting professionals to research some of the issues they need to discuss, and it can serve as a guide to landscape architects on smaller projects who will be doing lighting design themselves. This third edition has been updated to include guidance on how LED technology requires changes to the configuration of light fixtures. Sections on how to light residential and public spaces as well as specifics on how to light different plants, sculptures, walkways, and stairs make this a reference book designers should keep handy. (Landscape Architecture Magazine, November 2013)

expert opinion
By Joseph T. Masciotti
Still the best book for the professional. Invaluable resource for architects, landscape architects and landscape lighting designers. Broad and deep with plenty of technical information. I purchased this book in 1992 and I bought it again today (an electrician friend "lost" my original copy). A second edition (if planned) should include better information about transformer regulation (the ability of a low voltage lighting transformer to maintain 12v under load) and voltage drop (the dreaded decrease in voltage through the main supply cable) which are presented as formulae rather than actual measurements. Great photographs mostly of large scale projects. This book should be in every outdoor lighting designer's library.

There is a second edition (Wiley 2005) of the book revised and updated by the author to reflect changes and improvements in techniques and equipment. The second edition is easily recognized by the illustrated four color cover; the original had an illustrated dust cover (missing from the last run of the first edition) by the cover itself was plain black.

I have both editions and consider them a bargain in terms of concentrated relevant information.

Landscape Lighting 101
By P. Elliott
The Landscape Lighting book, by Janet Moyer, provides both an academic and practical level of landscaping lighting knowledge. Another good book, if you can find it, is the Ortho's book of How to Design and Install Outdoor Lighting.

In comparison, the Ortho book has more colorful pictures and offers a very colorful education - I'd say, more or less at a good high school level. If you want more of college level introduction to landscape lighting - perhaps, to start a business or to broaden your knowledge, The Landscape Lighting book is the book for you.

The Art and Craft of Landscape Lighting
By Thomas M. Williams
The second edition of Janet Lennox Moyer's THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK is an absolute necessity for everybody who works in landscape lighting or who is seriously interested in creating their own garden lighting. Ms Moyer has greatly revised and expanded the color plates and Chapter 4, "The Design Process - Documenting and Installing Landscape Lighting" as well as writing an entirely new Chapter 5 "Follow-up Work - Record Documents and Project Maintenance." These changes and additions and the many other updates make the new edition well worth the purchase price.

First published in 1992, THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK has served as the single and indispensable reference for the landscape lighting industry. It has offered all new landscape lighting practitioners guidance and provided an emerging industry the foundation necessary on which to build solid practice. While there is a wealth of other books that offer how-to help and publish pretty pictures, none of them even attempt to define and explain professional practice for the landscape lighting industry with Ms Moyer's authority and confidence.

THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK is not an easy book to read but it is well worth the effort. Once you understand the theory behind the short cuts and rules-of-thumb that other how to books offer, you are free to create your own. With the freedom you gain when you understand and can apply those fundamental principals and concepts to your landscape lighting, you become like the cook who ignores the printed recipe and creates a masterpiece of culinary art.

A Mickey Mouse ReaderFrom University Press of Mississippi

Ranging from the playful, to the fact-filled, and to the thoughtful, this collection tracks the fortunes of Walt Disney’s flagship character. From the first full-fledged review of his screen debut in November 1928 to the present day, Mickey Mouse has won millions of fans and charmed even the harshest of critics. Almost half of the eighty-one texts in A Mickey Mouse Reader document the Mouse’s rise to glory from that first cartoon, Steamboat Willie, through his seventh year when his first color animation, The Band Concert, was released. They include two important early critiques, one by the American culture critic Gilbert Seldes and one by the famed English novelist E. M. Forster.

Articles and essays chronicle the continued rise of Mickey Mouse to the rank of true icon. He remains arguably the most vivid graphic expression to date of key traits of the American character―pluck, cheerfulness, innocence, energy, and fidelity to family and friends. Among press reports in the book is one from June 1944 that puts to rest the urban legend that “Mickey Mouse” was a password or code word on D-Day. It was, however, the password for a major pre-invasion briefing.

Other items illuminate the origins of “Mickey Mouse” as a term for things deemed petty or unsophisticated. One piece explains how Walt and brother Roy Disney, almost single-handedly, invented the strategy of corporate synergy by tagging sales of Mickey Mouse toys and goods to the release of Mickey’s latest cartoons shorts. In two especially interesting essays, Maurice Sendak and John Updike look back over the years and give their personal reflections on the character they loved as boys growing up in the 1930s.

Review

“This book does a good job curating particularly significant pieces about the Mouse–from such noted writers as John Canemaker, John Culhane, E. M. Forster, John Updike, M. Thomas Inge, Charles Solomon and our own Jim Korkis, among many others.

The highlights for me are reading the older pieces–with such noted authors as Irving Wallace or a screenwriter like Frank S. Nugent discussing the evolution of Mickey Mouse in the 1940s–written at a time when the maturing studio was still in a “golden age.” And there is also some real meat here–Arthur Mann’s 1934 article for Harper’s Magazine on Disney’s finances and distribution is a real find.

Just when you think you’ve read it all, A Mickey Mouse Reader will indeed add to your knowledge of the Disney studio and its most famous creation. This is a good one, and I recommend it.”

―Jerry Beck, Cartoon Research (9/10/14)

“In his introduction to A Mickey Mouse Reader, editor Garry Apgar advises readers to enjoy the book’s segments at random, but I didn't follow his suggestions. I found this much more fascinating to read all the way through.

As someone who rarely lets a quality Disney book or research work go by without devouring it, I found it more fun and interesting to see how the Mickey Mouse phenomenon grew from hot new fad to artistic triumph to pass to dismissible to artistic and important over the decades.

Having read many works that have excerpted selections from many of these essays, it was nice to read them in context, because it really drives home the cultural dynamism of Mickey Mouse and the Disney empire, as well as its effect on those who lived through the various eras. Apgar created a fine assemblage of writings that are a good reference for enthusiasts and perhaps an eye-opener for those who can’t understand all the fuss about Mickey.”

―Greg Ehrbar, Blog Tracks (10/31/14); co-author (with Tim Hollis) of Mouse Tracks: The Story of Walt Disney Records

“My dad referred to Mickey Mouse as ‘a little creature dedicated to the purposes of laughter.’ He also advised us to remember that ‘It all started with a mouse’ . . . the empire that resulted that bears his name. Mickey means different things to different people, and Garry Apgar has compiled a fascinating selection of essays on The Mouse by some very important people. On Mickey’s behalf, I am very impressed.”

―Diane Disney Miller (1933–2013) was president of the Walt Disney Family Foundation and co-founder of The Walt Disney Family Museum

“A Mickey Mouse Reader is a book that commands attention for many reasons, but not least because it is a continually surprising pleasure to read. There is in the book much that is worth reading for its own sake, and not just as a record of how critical and public sentiment have changed in the more than three-quarters of a century since Mickey’s debut. Apgar’s own commentary gives the book a reassuring “spine” of informed judgment; that is, his authorial persona―especially his sophistication as a scholar in the visual arts―encourages the reader to accept his choices of what to include in the book. He has taken seriously the job of choosing the contents and as a result has come up with many fascinating items, including some originally published in other languages, that a less industrious compiler would have missed.”

―Michael Barrier, author of The Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney

“A Mickey Mouse Reader is a seminal book which will delight both casual Mickey Mouse enthusiasts and Disney history scholars. Thanks to Garry Apgar, no serious research about Mickey will ever be undertaken from this day forward without first absorbing the fascinating content of this delightful book.”

―Didier Ghez, author of Disney’s Grand Tour and editor of the Walt’s People book series

Entertaining, Enlightening Insights into a Cultural Icon and Economic Powerhouse
By S. O. Higgins
Mickey Mouse celebrated his 86th birthday in November 2014. His image is now found more often on merchandise than on movie and television screens, but his greatest performances continue to entertain us. Moreover, Mickey and the company built around him continue to influence world culture in ways that were inconceivable when he first attained public awareness in 1928’s “Steamboat Willie,” the first animated sound film.
For readers who, like me, first became aware of Mickey Mouse a few years after he made his final appearance as a lead “actor” on the big screen in 1953, Garry Apgar’s astutely chosen collection of news articles and essays on Mickey’s astonishing career is enlightening, comprehensive and thought-provoking. It is also fun to read.
Apgar’s selections cover Mickey’s role in advancing film technology and the quality of animated film, raising Depression-era spirits, saving bankrupt companies (toy train-maker Lionel and watchmaker Waterbury/Ingersoll), beating the Nazis, and building the hugely successful multimedia, real estate, and merchandising powerhouse that is The Walt Disney Company.
Much of the information in “A Mickey Mouse Reader “ will be of special interest to Baby Boomers who as children were proud members of the televised Mickey Mouse Club of the 1950s, but who later became bored or disillusioned by The Mouse. For them, Mickey--whose image was emblazoned on planes and combat vehicles during World War II as a symbol of American Idealism — became their special friend (“Why? Because we — i.e., Mickey and his Mouseketeer friends — like you!”). However, as they grew up and faced the issues rocking the country in the 1960s and 1970s, Mickey became for many a representative of commerce gone wild and a spokesman for cultural imperialism. Apgar’s collection clearly shows that, whatever Mickey has been (or not) over the years, representatives of varying political viewpoints, both in America and elsewhere, have attempted to co-opt The Mouse for their own purposes.
If, of course, you have no interest in cinema, no interest in animation, no interest in the nature of entrepreneurship, or in the making of cultural icons, you’ll find little of interest here. Likewise, if you are incurious as to the roles Mickey Mouse has played as a favorite of royalty, as a D-Day-related code word, and a persona of interest to writers as varied as Anna Quindlen, Walter Benjamin, Irving Wallace, E. M. Forster, James Michener, John Updike, artists Diego Rivera and Maurice Sendak, scientist Stephen J. Gould and Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt … well, this book is not for you.
For those, however, who have some of these interests, “A Mickey Mouse Reader” is a surprisingly informative book, well worth the time spent with it. The volume clearly demonstrates that one cannot be dismissive of The Mouse as a cultural signifier; and, Mickey must be reckoned with as the wellspring of the Disney company’s economic savvy, its creative processes, and its zealous protection of its intellectual property.
The book would benefit from having illustrations but it is, after all, a “reader,” not an art book. (Ideally, Apgar’s forthcoming volume dealing with Mickey as an American icon will provide appropriate balance, showing interpretations of Mickey by major visual artists). The book’s intellectual authority is aided by a comprehensive bibliography, capsule biographies of the essays’ authors, and the inclusion of both translations and reprints of essays originally published in German, French and Spanish.
Apgar has organized his selections chronologically, which enables his readers to discover for themselves the evolution of the Mickey (and Disney) story. Every article is reprinted in its entirety, resulting in the inclusion of passages that may strike some readers as repetitive. However, readers aware of how the sausage of media news is made, will find this “repetition” revealing: It demonstrates the degree to which reporters and essayists writing in the same timeframe drew upon skillfully managed interviews and “background kits” that were legitimately, but most certainly, orchestrated and provided by Disney publicists. The use of original articles in their entirety also tacitly demonstrates the way legends are built, myths created and errors perpetuated (or, less often, revised and corrected) as one generation of writers draws upon work from a preceding one.
Several articles in the anthology — notably those by Arthur Mann, Frank Nugent and L. H. Robbins deal in whole or part with the economic clout of The Mouse. (Walt Disney himself often referred to Mickey as The Mouse). The Disney Studio, particularly in its early days (it existed before Mickey, but it was Mickey that launched it as an entertainment powerhouse in 1928), derived more income from merchandising of Mickey products than from his films. (As “Mickey marketing” declined, those revenues were bolstered by licensing and sales of other Disney character images: Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, and major characters like those in the recent Disney blockbuster, “Frozen”). Frank Nugent writing in 1947, notes that Disney’s total revenue (much of it from merchandising and licensing of characters, mostly from Mickey), totaled about $100 million annually at the time, or about $1.65 billion in 2014 money. Of course, this was before Disney expanded into theme parks, cable, broadcast, live-action cinema and its many contemporary operations, which will give it estimated 2014 revenues in the $84-85 billion range. Today, it employs some 180,000 people worldwide, compared to about 650 when, at age 5, Mickey’s economic muscle first began to attract notice.
The University of Mississippi Press, which has established a strong presence as publisher of books on cartooning and animation, has further strengthened its reputation with the publication of this handsomely designed, built-to-last volume that makes a significant contribution to the field.
By way of disclaimer, I am an acquaintance of the editor (who also wrote the book’s introduction and included reprints of two of his own previously published articles). I did, however, purchase my copy (two, in fact) of this book from amazon.com. I have no connection with the publishing house, nor with The Walt Disney Company.

A book about the Mouse, not the Man
By RuthSophia
I really enjoyed learning a lot about the Mouse thanks to this volume. A truly fascinating history. Unfortunately, many people tend to rehash the things that are already known, as a result, after the first section or two, much of what is said about Mickey feels like a repeat until you get to the last section. If you want to skip over the middle sections of the book I don't think you'd miss much because the important parts of the middle sections are quoted in the last section.

At first I was disappointed that we did hear more about Walt in relation to Snow White or his other creations, but I reminded myself that this is a reader about the Mouse. Other commentary on those would be better and more appropriately served in another volume.

The reason I prefer the first couple and the last sections are because we get the initial critical reaction, as well as a look on how Mickey matured in those first several years, and then we get a relook at Mickey's career, including some new information that had been withheld in earlier articles. Some of the articles get very lengthy and tedious, but most are interesting, and many are short and sweet.

Even though I feel the middle sections are largely repeated information, overall the content of this book and it's wide appeal still make it recommended material with 4 stars.

I received a complimentary ebook in exchange for my honest review.

Defining the Mouse
By M. Sonntag
Mickey Mouse was born in 1928 out of economic desperation and went on to far exceeded the humble dreams of his creator Walt Disney. Mickey put Walt on the map and allowed him to fulfill his potential has a creative and entrepreneurial genius.

Mickey is more than a cartoon star, he's a cultural icon who remains the corporate identity of the studio he made famous. Although there were Disney cartoons before Mickey, Walt was certainly on the mark when he said "It all started with a mouse." Quite frankly, with Mickey's success it did.

But what made Mickey so special? What's his story? What is the appeal? Writers since day one have asked that question, Walt himself often seemed to struggle to define his greatest breakthrough. Garry Apgar opens up the vault as it were, on the discussion.

In A MICKEY MOUSE READER you will hear from Walt Disney himself to contemporary journalists, artists and historians about Mickey's appeal, his history and his future. You will journey through time and very literally witness the cultural evolution of the greatest cartoon star of all time. It's an entertaining journey, one to savor.
