Loved This Sweet Story

Past love, current love, unrequited love, this story had it all. Josh and Rachel are characters that come alive on the page. Josh, all good intentions at heart, is the kind of guy any girl would fall for. And Rachel, battling her own insecurities, is like all women. I enjoyed this sweet story so much!

Short but enjoyable

More of a novella that a novel, Cowboy Cupid tells the story of two people who have know each other most of their lives, work together almost every day, but do not acknowledge their feelings for each other. It takes the attempt by Josh to play Cupid to try to keep his ex-girlfriend at bay to bring these feelings to light. Billed as a Sweet Romance, Cowboy Cupid lives up to that description, and may seem a bit tame to those who prefer a racier story line. Overall, a quick, enjoyable read. Please note that I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A really sweet story, but way too short for my tastes.

This book was short, like really, really short! I really didn't pay attention to how short it was when I bought it, but if I had I never would have purchased it. It's a shame too because I think this author has so much promise, and I really loved the plot and this sweet romance in this story...... but paying for any story that is this short....it's just not worth it.

I am using the Kno E version. It is okay. I do not care for the format but I can not determine if it is becasuse it is on my tablet instead a hard copy. I felt that there was a lot of information on microbiology and light on the chemistry. The answers section ran together and it would have been clearer to have it in a bullet format.

Everything seems fine until one of the babies is born black and the other one is born white. What makes it worse is that Bridget's husband is black. How can this be? Bridget's life is spinning out of control and she confides in Jade. But can Jade be trusted?

Color Me Grey is a riveting debut novel by Michelle Janine Robinson. Robinson expertly tackled a rare but true medical occurrence of fraternal twins being born to two different fathers. But there is a lot more than meets the eye with this book. Readers will find that Bridget's twins aren't the main plot of this book and that there are some shocking revelations that will make your jaw drop. There are also some intriguing secondary characters that play a role in Bridget's life that are an integral part of the story. Color Me Grey is full of non-stop drama and devastating secrets that will make you want to read future novels by Michelle Janine Robinson.

YAESSSS Hunty!!!!!! YAESSSS!!! Just finished reading Color Me Grey. Chyle..........yawl need some Ivanbitch and some Patron with this one. Whew, from prostitution, rape, marriage and an manipulative friend that is more poison than pure. WHEW, poor Bridget Grey has been through more tribulations, trial and hell that most of us have and she has a pure heart of gold. This books has so much twist and turns and the ending with have you feening for a Newport. This book originally came out in 2010 and I have to say that Michelle Janine Robinson is not to slept on you guys. She is now one of my few faves and her book On the Other Side has made my Books, Beauty and Stuff top 25 list. She is already approved and this book is so exception. Yes definitely recommended to the fullest.

Pro (good examples of C++ used for algorithms); Con (very condensed explanation of C++ methods)

The "introduction" to C++ is done in stages as each basic feature of the language becomes relevant for numerically intensive computation. But the explanations are very brief -- accurate but with limited explanation.
These ares of the book might be best for someone who knows C++ basics or is using a companion text for learning C++.
The application of C++ to useful computational issues and algorithms is excellent - starting with simple examples and building logically to more complex methods and issues.
The exercises are useful. Even simple problems are not that simple and very illustrative when the user gets the exercise "solved" with a working program.
The C++ programming style is acceptable and clear but sparse rather than elegant. I think that instructors who teach C++ would want some style changes in the code and more annotation.
However I don't think those improvements are necessary for the issues and methods being explained by the author.
The book seems to be what it says it is -- a very good introduction to numeric programming using C++.
The author says that using C++ may be clumsy at first, but pays off handsomely in the long term. You will eventually gain efficiency in coding and speed of execution that surpasses other programming languages.
There are some approaches to complex problems that you can use with an OOP language that would be much more tedious in older languages like FORTRAN, Algol, C or PL-1 (which I used years ago).
A prime example is that a method for computing a solution using integers can be "inherited" by a method for real numbers, extra precision computation, complex numbers, etc. Each "new" method requires only modest additoins/changes from the "parent" method instead of a whole new "subroutine" with all the equations done again from scratch.

So far (about the first 25% of the book), it looks like he is right..

Overall, a nice complement to a standard C++ book

If studying computational engineering, this book is a nice addition to one of the standard Deitel texts or similar. It maybe isn't quite as comprehensive on all C++ features as a 2000 page text, but it offers nice insights/ examples from a more engineering-oriented perspective. I read both and get a lot out of the combination of the two.

One issue is that the accompanying code could be more well put-together. Some of the code in the book is not provided online and overall it would be nice to be able to quickly run the code shown in the book without having to type it all up and write your own dependent header files and such. This book might also be out of date with the 2011 C++ standard, which may or may not be an issue to some people.

excellent c++ introduction

If you are already a c++ expert and only looking for knowledge about numeric computing, this book is not for you because 80% of the book is about c++ rather than numeric computing. However, if you want to learn c++, you picked an excellent one for that matter. The author did a very good job to introduce c++ step by step. Every example is precise and right to the point. There is no garbage but full of useful information. That's why although the book is not big, the contents of the book covers almost all the important c++ features.
While I still believe c++ Primer and The c++ Programming Language are the best c++ book for reference, I would rate this one as the best c++ introduction book.

Inaccessible

Denn's text is much shorter than most introductions to fluid mechanics, but he seems to have left out all of the material that would make the topic interesting and accessible to the novice. The topics are well-ordered and have a logical progression, but almost all of the explanatory matter is missing. It is extremely difficult to get a conceptual understanding of fluid dynamics by looking at page after page of variable manipulation. In addition, the index is so incomplete as to be useless; most of the terms one would look up are not listed, or point only to the page where it was cursorily defined.
That said, this book can be salvaged for a class by a professor who is skilled at conveying concepts (rather than just equations.) I also suspect this book would be useful as a reference for those who have already learned the fundamental material. However, I recommend that the novice look elsewhere for a satisfactory introduction to fluid mechanics.

Pedagogically logical; ordered progression of concepts

Denn's book is an excellent introductory text for chemical engineering fluid mechanics. The book starts off with the basics of dim-analysis and proceeds into macro and then micro problems. This is a very logical ordering and allows the student to see the subject from a broader perspective instead of getting bogged down in the systematics of the problems themselves. A careful reading is definitely needed to get the most out of the book, though. And the section on turbulence is a bit unclear. Overall, though, a good book to keep for many years to come as a chem eng.

About the Author
Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) taught political science and philosophy at the New School for Social Research in New York, Brooklyn College, and the University of Chicago. She also wrote political studies "Origins of Totalitarianism" 1951, "The Human Condition" 1958, "Eichmann in Jerusalem" 1963


Winston was born in Minneapolis. He was educated at the Northup School and Folwell Junior High School. California became the family's home in 1959 and in 1962 he graduated from Glendale High. Later he attended San Jose State University and San Francisco State University, which awarded him a bachelor's degree in Semiotics in 1976. Between San Jose State and San Francisco State, he went to sea with the U.S. Seventh Fleet during the Vietnam conflict, serving as a deck-seaman and quartermaster for about 26 months.

The subject originated the Goethe cult in Berlin. Rahel wished not to soil the purity of life's happenstance. Arendt claims that German-speaking Jews were unique. This book is a contribution to the complex problem of assimilation.

Rahel had extraordinary intelligence and a typical romantic personality. Rahel Varnhagen was born in 1771 in Berlin and died in 1833. Reason may liberate the past and guide the future. Rahel had a sense of inferiority. Enlightenment teachings showed a way to move beyond mere facts. Rahel had an inclination to generalize.

Women were the agents of social assimilation at the time. In the Enlightenment the nobleman was being reduced to the bourgeoisie. Berlin was bourgeois. Rahel had a relationship with Count von Finckenstein which failed. He pulled away from her. Facing unhappiness and disgrace, Rahel felt marked. She was ashamed of unhappiness, of ugliness. She went to Paris in 1800. Bitterness was a consequence of melancholy. She fell in love.

Anti-Semitism spread through the Prussian provinces at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Rahel lacked grace through a lack of position. She was an outsider and without modesty. Rahel urged an unhappy friend to read Goethe as one would read the Bible, as a mediator. Through Goethe Rahel was forced to bow to objective reality.

In the Spring of 1808 Rahel met August Varnhagen in Berlin. He was rational, teachable, and fourteen years younger. When she criticized he was not offended. In 1814 she married Varnhagen.

A chronology appears at the end of this marvellous book. It is not a typical biography. Arendt is more concerned with mind, emotion, and societal setting than the usual biographer.

Hannah Arendt's Rachel Varnhagen: The Life of a Jewess is the biography of Varnhagen that simultaneously attempts to define Rahel Varnhagen's gender and national identity as a resident in early 19th century Germany in Varnhagen's own terms, while Arendt refines her political theory. Rachel Varnhagen is portrayed throughout the book as a complex character; a Jewish woman in a German society at the dawn and immediate following years of the Napoleonic Revolution. Arendt is an accomplished political-philosopher who despised being called a philosopher. Arendt's rise to academic prominence came when she wrote Eichmann in Jerusalem; Eichmann was where she coined the phrase "banality of evil" in reference to the famous trial of the Nazi Adolph Eichmann. Arendt was on assignment in Jerusalem for the Eichmann trial as a reporter for Harper's because she could not attain a university teaching position. Arendt had not successfully completed the monograph that was to be her Ph.D. dissertation. During the National Socialist ascension to power in 1933 Arendt was forced into exile, therefore hindering the completion of the biography of Varnhagen and her doctoral dissertation.
Arendt studied under Karl Jaspers and Martin Heidegger the later of which she had an affair. She is most known in political philosophy circles for her study of totalitarian regimes in Origins of Totalitarianism. Arendt collected the published and unpublished letters of the famous salon, bourgeoisie-oriented Varnhagen to map Varnhagen's identity through the inner voice she reveals in her letters. Through reading the letters it is evident that Varnhagen is practically apolitical, but she struggles with her German-Jewish identity and her life as a woman. Arendt explores the complexities of this dynamic through attempting to slip into Varnhagen and convey to the reader Varnhagen's existence. While in the process of amalgamating the various stories of Varnhagen, Arendt also devises her political theory.
Varhagen was at the center of an aristocratic salon where literature and culture were often discussed and she was viewed as a Jewish exception to anti-Semitism. It was believed at the beginning of the nineteenth century that all anti-Semites had their exceptional Jew, and for the many attendees of Varnhagen's salon it was Rahel. In adding her political theory into the construction of Varnhagen's biography Arendt spares Varnhagen no sympathy, often thinking that these very exceptions furthered the anti-Semitic cause.
In essence what Arendt has done is constructed a philosophical-psychological biography delving into the subject's mind, breaking the barrier between subject and observer by using the letters as a background to reconstruct the thoughts of Varnhagen. Varnhagen wrote her letters as a narrative, waiting and watching for life to unfold, unwilling to participate in introspection. Fearing that contemplation of the past might lead to her rejecting her identity and denial of her self-asserted uniqueness.
Varnhagen befriended many of the most prominent novelists and poets; her salon suggested a milieu of sophistication. However, Varnhagen's letters allowed Arendt intense introspection on the feeling of being a Jew in a largely anti-Semitic culture and being a woman in a misogynist culture. Arendt's political theory is never more evident then when she wears the skin of Varnhagen and talks about the Jewish question. Arendt believes that the common Jew attempted to escape their Jewishness (Varnhagen was baptized) only to allow other Jews to flounder in their Jewishness; each individual sought to break from the community at the cost of leaving the others to be victims of virulent anti-Semitism. Arendt is at her sharpest when she philosophizes on the impact of the Napoleonic Revolution on Jews, "it would be incomparably more difficult to escape from a reformed Judaism than from orthodox Judaism; that association for the assimilation of the Jews could lead ultimately to nothing but the preservation of Judaism in a form more suited to the times (179)."
In the preface to the book Arendt says, "It was never my intention to write a book about Rahel; about her personality, which might lend itself to various interpretations according to the psychological standards and categories that the author introduces from outside; nor about her position in Romanticism and the effect of the Goethe culture in Berlin, of which she was actually the originator; nor about the significance of her salon for the social history of the period; nor about her ideas and her "weltanschauung," in so far as these can be constructed from her letters. What interests me solely was to narrate the story of Rahel's life as she herself might have told it. (81)

Rahel believed she let life happen to her and simply observed and recorded her situations. She was, "letting life rain upon her." She was an prophetic individual that simply aspired to convey what happened to her as destiny. But in this role as intermediary recorder of the past she observed and her unknown, but unconscionable future destiny she thought she was an exception; one that must succumb to destiny, but not attempt to influence it. An individual that was so shortsighted that she failed to consider the fact that the destiny that awaited her, the history that was being revealed and shaped her life was less important than her own life. She was romanticized by contemplation of the past and its unraveling into the future of which she only thought she was a part. Varnhagen was a paradox; waiting like everyone else for history and life to happen but yet she continued to assert her uniqueness. Varnhagen attempts to solve the paradox by waiting for history to unveil, but not discover who she was-only what she could be. In the physical world Varnhagen could not deny her Jewishness, but she aspired to be malleable, devoid of shape and identity, traveling on the waves of history as they splashed on the shores of her continuously unfolding destiny. Arendt best summarizes Varnhagen by saying, "she wished to stand outside reality, to merely take pleasure in the real, to provide the soil for the history and the destinies of many people without having any ground of her own to stand on (145)."

Drama queen ...No thank you.

This was a good sequel to book 1. I enjoyed seeing how Angel and Kaylin met (my favorite couple thus far). This book centered largely around Tasha and Trae. I like Trae, but not Tasha. The constant drama she created and over reactions to situations were a bit off putting While Trae could "tame" her somewhat, I felt he must've had the patience of Job to deal with her. Her character is my least liked in this series. I'm hoping that changes, because I like Trae. Kaylin and Angel are an interesting couple, both created and presented as Alphas. While I easily forgot Tasha was supposed to be educated, I had no problem remembering Angel was a true lady and an educated one.

At any rate, good character development ( love them or not). Plot movement continued at a good pace and kept you interested.

Lovin' me some Kay!

Tasha and Trey I would say are my favorites now. I couldn't stop reading about the bad boy Trey. He was all that and didn't back off until he had what he wanted. He was killing me with his time though, if he said thirty seconds he was meaning just that. The mess with Nikayah was messed up, I was hoping he'd be over it. Angel and Kay couldn't get any better. I really enjoyed them just as much as the others. He went a little too hard over the fight though. In all I still think Faheem is the peace keeper/steady head out of all of them. I really enjoyed this books.

About the Author

John Kuriyan is Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology and of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. He began his career at Rockefeller University, New York and has been an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1990. His laboratory uses x-ray crystallography to determine the three-dimensional structures of proteins involved in signaling and replication, as well as biochemical, biophysical, and computational analyses to elucidate mechanisms. Kuriyan was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences in 2001.

Boyana Konforti is the launch Editor of Cell Reports, an open-access journal focused on short papers in biology. Konforti earned her PhD at Stanford University in the Biochemistry Department with Ronald W. Davis studying the mechanism of DNA recombination. Her postdoctoral studies at Rockefeller University with Magda Konarska and Columbia University with Anna Pyle were on the mechanisms of RNA splicing. Konforti has been a professional editor for over 13 years; most recently she was Chief Editor of Nature Structural & Molecular Biology.

David Wemmer is Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley and has served as Vice Chair, Assistant Dean, and Executive Associate Dean since joining the faculty in 1985. His research in structural biology uses magnetic resonance methods to investigate the structure of proteins and DNA toward a better understanding of how these molecules function. Systems studied include DNA-ligand complexes, covalent DNA adducts, protein-DNA complexes, and diverse proteins involved in cellular regulatory processes. Wemmer is a Fellow of the AAAS and a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi.

Excellent book - conceptual approach

This is an excellent book. Includes quantitative problems and explanations, but the approach is highly conceptual. Writing is clear and easy to read, at least, for a science text. I dropped the class because my schedule was too full, but am keeping the book as a resource.

Excellent introduction to biophysics

This book is well-written and well-organized with plenty of helpful examples, graphs and figures. It's a little equation-heavy, yet it still manages to keep the reader's focus on point.

Not all professors dislike this book!

Reader and Gardner didn't like the book; well, to each their own. As a professor, I _do_ use this as a class text.

R&G is right; the explanation on p161 for the beta-alpha-beta being (almost) always right-handed is "no convincing explanation" - while I have always thought it was to do with the natural twist of the beta-strands making the "overhand" - right-handed connection shorter, and thus more favoured. But this surely is a matter about which one could disagree: maybe the authors are right, and there is indeed no "convincing" explanation.

I haven't used it for the basic structural matters, which can be found in books like Petsko&Ringe or Branden&Tooze. However, as an introduction to a statistical thermodynamics way of approaching structure, I think it is excellent. It may be that the Dill&Bromberg "Molecular Driving Forces" would be good too; I have it on my shelf, but it is almost certainly too much for my students and for the time I have.
